Every electric fence, from a single strip-grazing wire to a 10-km perimeter, comes down to one purchase: the energizer (also called a fence charger or fencer). Pick one that is too small and the fence stops working the first time the grass grows into the wire; pick one that is too big and you have spent money on joules you will never use. This guide explains what the numbers on the box mean, how to size an energizer for cattle, horses, sheep and goats, how mains, battery, dual-purpose and solar units differ, and why the ground rods matter as much as the energizer. The product ratings below are the manufacturers' own figures for the Patriot and Speedrite units we sell on pipestonefarmsupply.ca; the sizing and grounding rules come from the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture fencing factsheets listed at the end.
What "joules" means on a fence charger
An energizer stores electrical energy and releases it down the fence wire as a very short pulse, about once a second. The pulse itself lasts roughly 0.3 milliseconds, which is why a properly built fence delivers a sharp but brief shock. The joule figure on the box is the size of that pulse. Some manufacturers advertise stored joules (the energy in the capacitor) and others output joules (the energy that actually reaches the wire); output joules is the honest number and the one the BC factsheet says to compare, so check which one a spec sheet is quoting before you compare two units. The joule figures quoted below are the output ratings shown on each product's page.
More joules means the pulse can push through more resistance: longer runs of wire, more strands, weed contact, dry ground and poor connections all eat energy. That is why the same energizer is rated for far fewer kilometres of a four-wire fence than a single wire.
Miles and acres ratings: read them as maximums
Patriot and Speedrite rate each energizer for a maximum distance of fence and a maximum acreage. Those ratings assume clean wire and good conditions. The BC Ministry of Agriculture factsheet on controllers gives the practical rule: a controller rated for 6 miles is enough for about 1.5 miles of a four-strand electrified fence, and wet vegetation touching the wire raises the power required again. So when you size, count total wire, not fence length. A 2-km perimeter with three hot wires is 6 km of wire.
Voltage on the wire is what the animal feels. The same factsheet gives the minimum guard voltage needed to deliver a shock: about 700 volts for short-haired stock such as cattle, 2,000 volts for long-haired or woolly animals such as sheep, and 2,500 volts or more for wildlife such as deer. A fence tester is the only way to know what you have; most producers aim well above these minimums so there is headroom for weed load.
Sizing by animal and fence
Cattle on a permanent perimeter. Cattle respect a fence at relatively low voltage, but ranch perimeters are long and often run through brush. For a mains-powered yard, the Patriot PMX600 (6.7 joules, rated up to 100 miles or 300 acres) and the Patriot PMX1500 (12 joules, rated up to 200 miles or 600 acres) cover most quarter-section layouts. For the largest grazing systems, the Speedrite mains units go further: the Speedrite 12000i Unigizer (12 joules, rated up to 90 miles or 500 acres) and the Speedrite 46000W (46 joules, rated up to 290 miles or 3,300 acres).
Horses on paddocks and cross-fencing. Horses need to see the fence as well as feel it, which is why tape and rope are common, and those conductors carry current less efficiently than steel wire, so give yourself headroom. A Patriot P20 dual-purpose (2.0 joules, rated up to 50 miles or 200 acres) or a Speedrite 3000 Unigizer (3 joules, rated up to 30 miles or 120 acres) handles a set of paddocks with tape on several strands.
Sheep and goats. Wool and a long coat mean you need the 2,000-volt-plus end of the scale, and goats test every weak spot. Multi-strand fences with five or more wires are normal, which multiplies the wire count. Size up rather than down: the Patriot P30 dual-purpose (3.0 joules, rated up to 65 miles or 260 acres) or the Speedrite 6000i Unigizer (6 joules, rated up to 60 miles or 240 acres, which includes a remote) are sensible starting points for a small flock or herd.
Strip grazing, temporary and garden fences. A single polywire or tape moved every day does not need a big pulse. The Patriot P5 dual-purpose (0.5 joules, rated up to 15 miles or 60 acres) and the Patriot PBX50 (0.5 joules, 12-volt battery) are built for exactly this.
Mains, battery, dual-purpose or solar?
110-volt mains (Patriot PMX series, Speedrite mains units). The cheapest joules and the least maintenance: plug it in inside a building and run an insulated lead-out wire to the fence. The BC factsheet describes utility-powered controllers as the choice for permanent installations. Choose mains whenever the fence starts within reach of a yard outlet. Entry point: the Patriot PMX120 (1.2 joules, rated up to 30 miles or 100 acres).
12-volt battery (Patriot PBX series). For remote fences with no power. You supply a deep-cycle 12-volt battery and recharge it on a schedule; how often depends on the unit's draw and how much of the pulse the fence is absorbing. The Patriot PBX120 (1.2 joules, rated up to 30 miles or 100 acres) and PBX200 (1.9 joules, rated up to 50 miles or 165 acres) are the mid-range battery units.
Dual-purpose 12 V / 110 V (Patriot P series, Speedrite Unigizer). One unit that runs on either a 12-volt battery or a household outlet. This is the flexible choice if the fence may move, or if you want to plug in at the yard in winter and run off a battery at the summer pasture. The Patriot P5, P10 (1.0 joule, rated up to 30 miles or 100 acres), P20 and P30 step up in half-joule to one-joule increments; the Speedrite Unigizer range runs from 1 to 18 joules on the same principle.
Solar (Patriot SG series). A solar panel, battery and energizer in one weatherproof case that you post at the fence. The BC factsheet describes solar as a system that trickle-charges the battery, so the panel has to keep up with the energizer's draw; in Alberta that means short winter days and snow-covered panels reduce what a solar unit can do from November to February, and most producers reserve solar for the grazing season. The ground system: half of the circuit
An electric fence is a loop. The pulse leaves the energizer, travels down the wire, passes through the animal into the soil, and returns to the energizer through the ground rods. If the ground side is weak, the animal feels a fraction of the voltage no matter how many joules you bought. The BC Ministry of Agriculture grounding factsheet gives the specification: galvanized steel rods 6 feet long and 5/8 inch in diameter, a minimum of three rods for the main ground, spaced 6 feet apart and connected in series with galvanized wire and proper clamps, kept at least 7 feet away from utility grounds, telephone grounds and building foundations. On long fences in dry country it recommends an extra single ground rod roughly every half mile. To test the ground, load the fence down and read the voltage between the ground rod and the soil a few feet away; a reading around 200 volts or less means the ground is adequate, and anything higher means add rods.
Dry, sandy, rocky or frozen soil conducts poorly, so an earth-return fence that works in May can fade in a dry August or in winter. The factsheet's answer is a wire-return (earth-wire) system, where alternate wires are connected to the ground terminal so the animal bridges a hot wire and a ground wire directly; in very dry sites it also describes salt-core ground rods. Both are worth planning for on Alberta soils that freeze hard for four months.
Quick checklist before you buy
Count wire, not fence. Total length of every electrified strand, then apply the four-strand rule above.
Match the animal. Cattle need the least voltage, sheep and goats the most; horses need visible conductors, which cost efficiency.
Pick the power source by where the fence starts, not by what is cheapest: mains if an outlet is within reach, dual-purpose if the fence moves, solar for remote summer grazing.
Budget for three ground rods and a tester. They are the difference between a fence that works and one that does not.
