The PMX50 is the smallest of the PMX mains units and the natural first step past the little PE chargers. Patriot rates it at 0.85 stored joules, 0.5 joules of output, up to 15 miles of fence or 60 acres. On an acreage or a small mixed farm that is usually the perimeter and a couple of paddocks with room left over. What you gain over the PE range is more than joules. You get the PMX housing with its several mounting options and a three-year warranty that includes lightning instead of two. Half a joule of output is enough for horses, a few cows, sheep and goats on a clean, well-grounded line. The word clean is doing some work in that sentence. Sixty acres assumes wire that is not lying in grass and a ground rod in soil that holds moisture. Come July, one row of foxtail leaning on the bottom strand will take more out of a small energizer than most people expect. Mow or spray under the line, keep the bottom wire high enough to clear snow, and check the fence with a tester rather than trusting the indicator light.
