Details
The SolarGuard 500 is the first of the 12V solar units and a common landing spot for a small to mid-sized outfit. Patriot rates it at 0.65 stored joules, 0.5 joules of output, up to 30 miles of fence or 100 acres, from a 9.6W panel and an internal rechargeable 12V battery. Stepping up from the 6V units buys you more than joules. The larger battery carries you through longer stretches without sun, and that is what actually kills a solar fence in this country. It is rarely a shortage of raw output. It is a run of grey November days with a battery that never quite catches back up. It is fully weatherproof with several mounting options, so it can sit permanently on a corner post or travel along with your grazing plan, and a fence lead set is included. As always, the rating assumes wire that is not lying in grass and a ground field with enough rods driven into soil that holds moisture. Keep the panel facing south with nothing shading it, clear the snow, and it does its job. Three-year warranty including lightning.
