Speedrite S500 12v solar energizer

The S500 is the smaller of the two portable solar units. Speedrite gives it 0.50 joules of maximum output from 0.65 joules stored, powering up to 5 km of fence, running on a 12 volt 7 amp hour battery with a three year warranty. This is the size for a horse paddock, a bull pen, a strip-grazing setup, or keeping stock off a dugout or a stack yard. Jobs where the fence is short, the animals are respectful, and you want something you can carry to where it is needed and then forget about. It is not the unit for a quarter section of barbed wire with an offset on it. On a half joule unit there is no reserve to waste, so everything about the installation has to be clean. A single grass stem across the wire matters here in a way it does not on a big mains energizer. Keep the line clear, use good insulators, and put in proper ground rod even though the unit is small. Dry summer soil and frozen winter soil both fight you, and a small energizer with a poor earth is a fence that does not hold. Test at the far end of the run to see what you have actually got.
