The Speedrite AN90 is the portable battery energizer most horse people and small acreage owners end up with. Speedrite rates it to power up to 2 miles or 5 acres of fence. It runs off its own battery, so there is no cord to find an outlet for and nothing to mount. That portability is the point. It travels to rodeos, horse shows and trail rides, sets up a corral in an hour, and comes home in the truck box. On the home place it handles a paddock, a weaning pen, a strip of regrowth you want grazed off, or a hot wire keeping horses off a rail fence they have started chewing. Set it beside the fence, clip the leads, drive a ground rod, and you have a working fence. The 2 mile and 5 acre ratings assume a short, clean run with a proper ground and grass off the wire. It is not a pasture energizer — if you are holding cattle on quarters of permanent fence, you want a unigizer. Watch the battery in cold weather; a battery that runs the unit for weeks in July will fade quickly at minus twenty-five, so check fence voltage rather than assuming it is still working.
