Tomcat bait stations: mouse vs rat, refillable vs disposable, what the label says

Which Tomcat station is registered for mice and which for rats, how the refillable (diphacinone) and Advanced Formula (bromethalin) labels differ, and the spacing, bait-duration and glove rules each label sets.

Every fall, once the nights cool, mice and rats move toward barns, shops, garages and houses. The Tomcat range we list at Pipestone Farm Supply covers three approaches: baited stations (rodenticide), traps (snap, wood, glue and live-catch) and repellents. This guide sticks to what the Health Canada-registered labels for the four Tomcat bait stations actually say, so you can pick the right one and use it the way the label requires.

Mouse or rat? The label tells you which station to use

Each Tomcat bait station is registered for a specific animal. The label for the Tomcat Mouse Killer Refillable Bait Station (PCP Reg. No. 31500) reads: "Use bait to control House mouse (Mus musculus) indoors and outdoors within 15 metres of buildings." The label for the Tomcat Rat Killer Refillable Bait Station (PCP Reg. No. 32034) reads: "Use bait to control the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) and roof rat (Rattus rattus)."

The same split applies to the Advanced Formula stations. The Health Canada label registered as Tomcat Mouse Killer Bait Station Advanced Formula (PCP Reg. No. 34875) is "For use to control house mice (Mus musculus) indoors and outdoors", and the one registered as Tomcat Rat Killer Bait Station Advanced Formula (PCP Reg. No. 34876) says: "Use bait to control Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) and Roof rat (Rattus rattus) indoors and outdoors within 15 metres of buildings."

A mouse station is built for mice and a rat station for rats; the labels give different spacing and bait-duration rules for each, so match the station to the animal you are seeing.

Refillable or disposable: two different active ingredients

The refillable stations we list use one active ingredient and the Advanced Formula disposable stations use another. From the labels:

The Mouse Killer Refillable (31500) and Rat Killer Refillable (32034) labels list the active ingredient as "Diphacinone 0.005%". Diphacinone is an anticoagulant rodenticide.

The Advanced Formula labels (34875 and 34876) list the active ingredient as "Bromethalin 0.01%". Bromethalin is not an anticoagulant; the label's first-aid note describes the effects in terms of cerebral edema.

This matters for one practical reason: the two labels give different bait-availability instructions, so read the one that matches the station you bought rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

Refillable stations: what the label says about spacing, bait and checking

Tomcat Mouse Killer Refillable Bait Station, 8 x 28 g and 16 x 28 g (PCP 31500). The label says: "Place one block of bait in the bait station." Spacing: "If additional units are needed, place bait stations at 2.5 to 3.5 metre intervals." Duration: "Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for 15 days or until signs of mouse activity cease." And a rule that applies to every domestic rodenticide block: "Bait MUST be placed in tamper-resistant bait stations."

Tomcat Rat Killer Refillable Bait Station, 15 x 30 g (PCP 32034). The label says: "Place bait stations at 5 to 10 metre intervals." and "Replace bait in bait station when bait is consumed or contaminated." It describes the unit as a "Child & dog resistant bait station."

The refillable stations ship with their blocks (8, 16 or 15 depending on the pack). People often arrive at our rat-station page looking for stand-alone refill blocks; we do not currently list a separate refill pack, so the block count in the pack is the supply you have.

Disposable Advanced Formula stations: what the label says

Tomcat Mouse Killer Disposable Bait Station Advanced Formula, 28 g and the 4 x 28 g pack (PCP 34875). Spacing: "If additional units are to be used, place bait stations at 2 to 4 metre intervals." Duration: "Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for at least 7 days." Described as a "Child & dog resistant bait station."

Tomcat Rat Killer Disposable Bait Station Advanced Formula, 113 g and the 2 x 113 g pack (PCP 34876). Spacing: "Use 1 bait station every 5 to 10 metres." Duration: "Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for 10 days, or until signs of rat activity cease in infested areas."

Disposable means the whole unit, bait and all, is discarded when it is spent; the label does not describe opening or refilling it.

Gloves, dead rodents and clean-up

All four labels require gloves. The rat refillable label (32034): "Rubber gloves must be worn when collecting and disposing of emptied bait stations and disposing of dead rodents." The mouse refillable label (31500): "Wearing gloves, collect and dispose of unconsumed bait and dead exposed rodents according to local requirements." The Advanced Formula rat label (34876): "Wearing rubber gloves, collect and dispose of bait stations with unconsumed bait and dead exposed rodents according to local requirements."

A poisoned rodent is itself a hazard to a dog, cat or bird that eats it, which is why every label requires prompt collection and disposal of dead rodents; do it as the label and your municipality require. The stations are described as child and dog resistant, not child and dog proof: place them where the label allows and where children and pets do not play.

When a trap is the better tool

Rodenticide is not the only option, and in a kitchen, a feed room or a chicken coop a trap avoids the question of where a poisoned rodent will die. We list the Tomcat Rat Snap Trap, Tomcat Mouse Snap Traps 2-pack, classic Mouse Wood Traps 4-pack and Rat Wood Traps, the Spin Trap for Mice, Mouse Glue Traps 4-pack and Rat Glue Traps 2-pack, plus the Single and Multiple Live Catch Mouse Trap. The Tomcat Mouse and Rat Attractant Gel is a bait for traps, not a rodenticide.

For deterrence rather than removal there is the Tomcat Rodent Repellent Spray 400 g and the Tomcat Ultrasonic Rodent Repeller. Read each label for where it may be used.

Mice are not the only pest that moves indoors once the nights get cold. Everything we list for rodents is gathered under mouse and rat control, and the ant products sit under ant control - the Ortho Ant B Gon Max range of baits, sprays, foam, granules and ant traps, each with its own Health Canada registration, plus an intro that explains which formats are baits you leave undisturbed, which are contact sprays, and which are registered for outdoor use only.
