Two stations is the sensible minimum for rats, because a single placement rarely covers the routes a rat colony is using. Rats travel established paths along foundations, walls, fence lines and under decks, and they range much farther than mice, so treating one run while another stays untouched drags the job out for weeks. Two placements on two identified runs works considerably faster. Both units arrive pre-loaded and sealed. Set them, let rats feed through the openings, and discard the whole station when it is finished — you never touch bait. That containment is the part that makes bait acceptable to use around a yard or a farm, where a dog, a barn cat or poultry might otherwise find pellets. Find the runs before you place anything. Look for greasy rub marks along walls, burrow openings, worn trails through grass, droppings, and gnawing on wood or plastic. Put the stations right on those routes, tight against the wall or structure, and then leave them undisturbed. Rats are suspicious of new objects and often take several nights to commit, so patience is part of the technique. Read the label for the active. With anticoagulant rodenticides, vitamin K1 given by a veterinarian is the antidote; some other actives have no straightforward one. Keep the packaging and call a veterinarian or poison centre immediately if a pet, child or livestock animal gets into bait — do not wait for signs to appear. Look for and remove carcasses daily. A poisoned rat is a hazard to the dog, cat, owl or hawk that eats it. And do the unglamorous work too: rats get in through gaps you can close and stay for feed you can put in metal bins.
