The reason enclosed traps sell well has nothing to do with effectiveness and everything to do with squeamishness, which is a perfectly fair basis for choosing a trap. The mouse enters, the mechanism kills quickly inside the housing, and you dispose of the catch without seeing or touching it. In a kitchen, a bedroom, an office, or anywhere children will walk past, that enclosure also means fingers and paws cannot reach the mechanism at all. Functionally they do the same job as a snap trap: fast kill, no toxin in the building, no poisoned mouse for a cat or an owl to eat, and certainty about what you caught. The trade-off is cost per trap and a slightly smaller entry, which some mice take a night or two longer to use. Placement is the same discipline as always. Mice run along walls and under cover and live in very small territories, so set traps flush against a wall in the spots where you have found droppings, gnawing or nesting material, with the entry facing along the runway. Two traps in one active spot beat two traps in two guesses. Bait small and sticky where the design allows it — a dab of peanut butter, chocolate, or a bit of bacon — and check the traps daily. A trap that has fired and not been emptied stops working and starts to smell. Wash the housing between uses if you plan to reuse it, and handle disposal with gloves. And finish the job at the building: a mouse enters through a gap the width of a pencil, so sealing entry points and getting feed and pet food into metal containers is what keeps the traps from being needed next month.
