Glue boards are a flat tray coated in strong adhesive. A mouse crossing one is held in place. They are cheap, they need no setting, they fit into narrow gaps a snap trap will not, and they leave no poison anywhere — which is why they are standard in food-handling facilities and useful in a home for finding out where mice are travelling. The welfare side has to be stated plainly. A glue board does not kill. It holds the animal, and it dies slowly of stress, exhaustion, dehydration or suffocation, sometimes over many hours. Trapped animals struggle hard enough to injure themselves, and anyone who has picked up an occupied board knows it is a genuinely unpleasant thing to deal with. Glue traps are restricted or banned outright in some jurisdictions for exactly this reason. If a quick kill matters to you — and for most people it does once they have seen one — a snap trap or an enclosed kill trap does the same job humanely for similar money. Where they are hard to beat is monitoring. Laid along walls in a run of likely spots, glue boards tell you within a night or two where activity actually is, so you can concentrate real traps there. Used that way, and checked several times a day so nothing is left suffering, they are a reasonable tool. They are also indiscriminate. Boards catch songbirds, small snakes, lizards, young cats and, in a barn, bats — non-target catches are common and hard to release. Place them where only mice can reach: tight against walls, behind appliances, inside a covered station. Check them frequently, dispose of used boards promptly, and keep them well away from children and pets, since the adhesive is very difficult to remove from skin, hair and fur.
