Four stations is the useful quantity, and the reason is biology rather than marketing. A house mouse lives in a very small territory — often just a few metres of wall — and it will not cross a room to find bait. One station in a basement tells you almost nothing about the mice in the kitchen. Covering the several places mice are actually working is what ends a problem, and that means multiple placements at once, not one station moved around over three weeks. Each unit arrives pre-loaded and sealed. You put it down, mice feed through the openings, and you discard the whole station when it is spent, without handling bait. That containment is most of the safety value: bait inside a station with mouse-sized entries is far harder for a dog, cat, child or bird to reach than pellets scattered behind an appliance. Place them flush against walls, in corners, behind appliances, along basement sills, in the back of cupboards, and in the garage or shop — wherever you have found droppings, gnawing or nesting material. Mice run along edges and under cover, so a station tight against a wall in a dark spot works and one in the open does not. Check the label for the active ingredient and keep the packaging. Anticoagulant rodenticides have vitamin K1 as an antidote, given by a veterinarian; some other actives do not have a simple antidote. If a pet or child gets into bait, call a veterinarian or poison centre right away with the label — do not wait for signs. Expect to find dead mice, pick them up promptly, and remember that owls, hawks and barn cats can be poisoned by eating them.
