Four is the number that gets the job done, and the reason is how mice live. A house mouse occupies a territory only a few metres across and will not travel across a building to find your trap. One trap in a basement and one in a kitchen catch one mouse each, slowly. Four traps clustered in the place you are actually seeing droppings will clear that place in a couple of nights. Wooden traps make that approach affordable. They cost little enough that most people throw out the trap along with the catch rather than resetting it, which is the least unpleasant way to handle the job. And there is no poison involved, which means nothing for a dog or a child to get into, no dead mouse rotting inside a wall, and no risk of poisoning the cat that catches a poisoned mouse. Set them flush against walls with the trigger end toward the wall, in corners, behind the fridge and stove, along basement sills, in the back of cupboards — anywhere with droppings, gnawing or shredded nesting material. Bait with a pea-sized dab of peanut butter worked into the trigger so it cannot be carried away; chocolate, bacon and dried fruit work too, and nesting material like cotton or floss is excellent in winter. Mice are not shy of new objects the way rats are, so set them the first night. If three nights pass with nothing, the location is wrong — move the traps rather than switching bait. Mind your fingers, keep traps out of reach of children and pets, check them daily, and use gloves to dispose of catches. Then seal the entry hole. A mouse gets through a gap the width of a pencil, and until that gap is closed you will keep resetting traps.
