These devices plug into an outlet and emit high-frequency sound meant to make a space unpleasant for rodents. The appeal is obvious: nothing toxic, no traps to empty, nothing for a child or a dog to get into, and no dead mouse behind the drywall. For someone who genuinely will not use poison or traps, that has value. The honest part is the evidence. Independent testing of ultrasonic rodent repellers has generally found modest, short-lived, or no effect. The consistent findings are that ultrasound does not travel through walls, furniture or clutter — it is blocked and reflected, leaving shadows that a mouse can simply live in — and that rodents habituate to a constant sound within days to weeks, particularly when the space has food and shelter they need. A hungry mouse with an established nest does not leave over noise. So use it for what it can plausibly do. In a small, hard-surfaced, largely empty enclosed space, an ultrasonic unit may add some deterrence to a room you are trying to keep rodent-free. It is not a treatment for an active infestation, and putting one in a cluttered basement while mice are nesting in the insulation is not going to work. What does work, reliably: closing entry points, since a mouse gets through a gap the width of a pencil; storing feed and pet food in metal containers; clearing harbourage against the walls; and trapping, which gives you certainty and no secondary poisoning risk. If you buy this, buy it as a supplement to those things rather than instead of them, and keep an eye out for droppings so you know whether it is doing anything at all.
