Rats are a program, not an event. They breed fast, they are wary of new things, and on a farm or acreage there is usually a reservoir somewhere — a granary, a straw pile, a neighbour's yard — that keeps sending them back. A refillable station with a real supply of bait is what a program looks like: a durable housing you keep, lock, anchor and reposition, fed with refills as they get eaten. Being lockable and anchorable is not a small detail. It keeps bait away from dogs, barn cats, poultry and children, it stops a station from being carried off, and it is the direction regulations have moved for exactly those reasons. Loose bait in a shed is both less effective and a genuine hazard. Set stations on the runs rats are already using — along foundations and walls, at burrow entrances, under decks and granary floors, on the worn paths through grass. Look for rub marks and droppings first; a station placed by evidence works, and one placed for convenience does not. Expect several nights of suspicion before feeding starts, and check and refill regularly once it does. Sudden heavy consumption means a bigger population than you assumed. Wear gloves when refilling, keep bait away from feed and water, keep the original label with your supply, and never decant bait into an unmarked container. Know the active ingredient. Vitamin K1 given by a veterinarian treats anticoagulant poisoning; some other rodenticide chemistries have no simple antidote. Call a veterinarian or poison centre immediately with the label if a pet, child or livestock animal gets into bait. Walk the placements and collect carcasses daily — secondary poisoning of cats, dogs, owls and hawks is the real cost of baiting, and picking up dead rats is most of the prevention.
