Rat-sized glue boards are larger and more heavily coated than mouse boards, and their honest best use is finding out where rats are working rather than controlling them. Laid along a suspected run, a board picks up tracks, hair, droppings and smears that tell you exactly where to put snap traps or a bait station — information that is worth more than the catch. As a control tool for rats they are poor, and it is worth being blunt about why. A rat is strong. Many rats caught on a glue board pull free, sometimes leaving skin and fur behind, and the ones that do not pull free are held alive and die slowly of stress, exhaustion and dehydration. Neither outcome is good: the escaped rat becomes trap-shy and harder to catch afterward, and the held rat suffers for hours. Glue traps are restricted or banned in some jurisdictions on welfare grounds, and for rats specifically a properly pre-baited snap trap is both more humane and considerably more effective. They are also indiscriminate. Boards catch birds, snakes, kittens and bats, and releasing a non-target animal from strong adhesive rarely ends well. If you use them, use them briefly and deliberately: place along walls and runways where only rats can reach — behind equipment, tight to a foundation, inside a covered station — check them several times a day so nothing is left suffering, and pull them once you know where the activity is. Then set traps there. Keep boards away from children and pets; the adhesive does not come off skin, hair or fur easily. Wear gloves for handling and disposal, and wash your hands afterward.
