A single-catch live trap is finished after one mouse, which in practice means one mouse a day at best. A multi-catch trap keeps working: mice enter through a one-way mechanism and are held in a chamber, so you can catch several overnight from one placement. If you are committed to live capture and you have an actual population rather than one visitor, this is the format that keeps up. The same honesty applies as with any live trap, and more so with several animals in one chamber. Mice held together with no water, no food and no space become stressed quickly, and in cold or heat they can die within hours — which defeats the entire purpose. Check it first thing every morning and again through the day. A multi-catch trap left over a long weekend is a grim thing to open. Release thoughtfully. A house mouse let go near the building comes back, and one released far off in winter, with no nest or food cache in unfamiliar ground, usually does not survive. Release well away from buildings, into cover, in mild weather, and check whether relocating animals is restricted where you live. Set the trap flush against a wall with the entry facing along the runway, in the places you have found droppings, gnawing or shredded nesting material. Bait is optional with most one-way designs but a small dab of peanut butter helps. Mice are not shy of new objects, so it can produce the first night. Wear gloves when handling and emptying it, rinse it between uses, and wash your hands — wild mice carry disease. And seal the entry gaps, because trapping alone never gets ahead of a building that lets mice in.
