Cattle reach further than people credit. A hot wire mounted tight to the post gets tested with a nose, then a shoulder, and eventually the post gets pushed. The animal learns the shock is survivable if you go through quickly. Standing the wire well out from the fence changes that arithmetic. Patriot rates this one at 13 cm (5 inches) of offset, more than double the short slant, and lists it for poliwire, polirope and steel or aluminium wire. Nails are included, twenty-five per pack, product codes 880 0003-266 and 880 0003-267, with a five-year warranty. Black body, SKU 820026. The deeper offset earns its keep on a fence you are protecting rather than one you are building: an old page wire line, a rail fence a horse is chewing, or a treed line fence where you want stock away from the wire entirely. The extra clearance also keeps the conductor out of the snow that piles against a solid fence. Watch the width in lanes and alleys. Thirteen centimetres each side takes 26 cm out of a working alley, which matters when you are pushing cattle or backing a trailer. Where that is tight, use the 2 inch slant instead.
