A hundred feet of light aluminum wire is a repair and connection roll rather than a fencing roll. It is what you reach for when you need a jumper between two strands, a lead from the energizer to the fence, a hot wire under a gateway, or a patch where something took out a section. Aluminum is the right material for this work. It conducts far better than steel of the same gauge, which means a short jumper is not quietly costing you voltage, and it does not rust, so a connection made this year is still a connection in five years. Seventeen gauge is soft enough to bend and wrap by hand in cold weather without fighting it. Keep a roll in the fence bucket alongside crimp sleeves and a strainer or two. Most fence problems on an acreage are not broken fences, they are bad connections, and having wire on hand is the difference between fixing it now and running an unreliable fence until the weekend. For long permanent main lines, step up to 14 gauge.
