Aluminum is the wire of choice for electric fence for two reasons: it conducts far better than steel of the same size, and it does not rust. On a long run that difference shows up as volts at the far end, which is the only number that actually matters when cattle are pushing a fence a mile from the energizer. Fourteen gauge is the heavy option. It carries more current than 17 gauge with less voltage drop, so it is what you want on the main line of a permanent fence, on long single-strand runs across a section, and on underground lead-outs and jumpers where you cannot afford losses. It also stands up better to being handled and re-tensioned. Aluminum is soft, so it does not want to be strained like high-tensile steel. Tension it firm, not tight, use in-line strainers or compression springs to take up slack as it moves with the seasons, and join it with crimp sleeves rather than twists - a twisted aluminum joint oxidizes and goes resistive. Quarter-mile roll.
