On a big fence the enemy is resistance. Every foot of undersized wire between the energizer and the far corner drops voltage, and the animal at the end of the line gets a fraction of what the energizer is putting out. Heavy aluminum wire is how you keep that from happening - aluminum conducts far better than steel wire of the same gauge and never rusts out. Fourteen gauge is the heavy-duty choice, and a half-mile roll is a working quantity. Use it for the main hot line on permanent perimeter fence, for long runs across open quarters, and for lead-out and underground cable where losses are expensive to fix later. Fewer joins over the length of a run also means fewer places for a fault to develop. Handle it like aluminum, not high-tensile: tension it firm and let in-line strainers or compression springs take up the seasonal slack instead of pulling it drum-tight. Join with crimp sleeves. A hand twist in aluminum oxidizes over a winter or two and turns into a resistive spot you will spend an afternoon hunting for.
