Details
Voltage does not only leak where the wire touches something. On a wet or frosty post, a conductor sitting close to the wood will track across the surface to ground, and the fence reads fine on a dry afternoon and weak every morning until the sun comes up. The jumbo claw answers that with size. The shield is oversized to lengthen the path between conductor and post, which is what actually reduces arcing and leak, and the claw takes polyrope, polywire and fence wire up to 6 mm (1/4 inch). White body, twenty-five per pack, Patriot SKU 814718, and it suits metal pipe posts as well as wood. If your fence tests strong in dry weather and drops after rain or a heavy frost, insulator size is one of the first things to look at, along with vegetation on the wire and the state of your ground rods. A bigger shield on the wet-side posts costs less than more joules. Mount them at a consistent height and on the stock side of the post, so pressure on the wire pushes toward the post rather than levering the insulator off it.
