Leads are the two wires that turn a solar energizer into a fence. One runs from the unit to the hot wire, the other from the unit to the ground rod, and both have to be properly insulated and properly connected or the fence never performs the way the label says it will. They are also the first thing to get damaged. A lead gets nicked by a mower, chewed by a curious calf, cracked by sunlight after a few seasons, or simply lost when a portable unit is moved and a clip ends up in the grass. A spare set on the shelf means you are not improvising with lamp cord and electrical tape at the far end of a pasture. Pay particular attention to the ground lead. It is the one people treat as an afterthought and it carries the same current as the hot lead. A poor ground connection is the most common reason a solar fence underperforms in this country, where dry summers and frozen winters both work against you. Use the proper lead, clamp it tight to a real ground rod, and check it in spring after the frost has heaved everything around.
