Rod posts are quick to drive and cheap to run, but the post itself conducts, so the wire has to be held well clear of it. These screw onto the rod and give the conductor a seat away from the metal, which is the difference between a fence and a very long ground wire. They get used most on temporary and semi-permanent work. An extra hot strand added inside an existing fence line, a cross fence built for one grazing season, a run thrown around a hay yard in a hurry before the snow comes. They go on and come off with a twist, which is what you want when the same rods get pulled and moved several times a summer. Black is the choice for a fence you would rather not look at. On a yard fence, along a driveway, or anywhere you have a view worth keeping, black insulators disappear against dark posts and dark backgrounds. Go with the yellow instead when the priority is people spotting the fence, around a farmyard with kids and visitors, or on a line that crosses a trail. Twenty-five to a pack does a fair stretch.
