Patriot porcelain screw-in insulator (large) 15/bx
Large porcelain screw-in insulators, fifteen to a box, for permanent line posts where the wire needs real standoff from the wood.
Details
These thread straight into a wooden post, so there is no separate bracket or staple to work loose over a few frost cycles. The large size gives you more standoff between conductor and post, which is what you want on a permanent line carrying serious voltage, or anywhere the wire swings around in wind. Standoff is not a small detail. Wood only insulates well when it is dry, and a poplar or pine post through a wet April is not dry. Keep the wire well off the post face and you keep the leakage down. On a long line, small leaks at dozens of posts add up to a fence that reads strong at the energizer and weak at the far gate. Porcelain earns its keep on the posts you would rather not visit again. Plastic is fine on a seasonal fence, but on a permanent perimeter that sits through thirty below in January and bakes at thirty above in July, porcelain is still doing its job long after plastic has crazed around the screw hole. Pre-drill a pilot hole in hard, seasoned wood or the screw will fight you the whole way.
