A line insulator only has to hold a wire in place. An end strain insulator has to hold the entire tension of the run, and on a long straight in this country that is real load. Frost lifting a post, a chinook swinging the temperature thirty degrees in an afternoon, cattle leaning on a line: it all ends up back at the end assembly, and the insulator there is the part that either holds or lets go. These sit between the strained wire and the anchor point at ends, corners and gateways. They take the pull while keeping the live wire well clear of the timber. Ten to a pack, black, in a pattern meant to be tied into rather than clipped on. Get the end assembly right and the rest of the fence looks after itself. A well-braced corner, wire terminated through a proper strain insulator, and tension held by a spring or an inline strainer further down the run. Cut the corner here and you will be back out with a come-along every spring, chasing slack you should not have had.
