Wood posts and hot wire do not mix. Dry tamarack or cedar insulates reasonably well in August, but the same post soaked through in a March thaw turns into a conductor, and the fence bleeds voltage at every point of contact. An insulator between wire and wood is not optional on a system you expect to hold cattle. These are the plain square pattern in black, twenty-five to a pack. They are the everyday line-post insulator on a wood post fence, fastened to the face of the post to carry the wire past it. Black plastic holds up better against sun fade than the lighter colours, though on a fence that horses need to see, let the conductor do the visual work rather than the insulator. Buy more than you think you need. A quarter mile of five-wire fence goes through them fast, and the ones that crack while you are nailing them up at minus fifteen are the ones you will not want to drive to town for. Keep a spare pack behind the seat for repairs.
