People ask us for "the strongest mouse poison in Canada". Health Canada's pesticide labels do not rank products by strength. What they do set is the active ingredient, the marketing class (Domestic or Commercial), where the bait may be used, whether it must sit in a tamper-resistant station, and how long to keep fresh bait out. This guide sorts the rodent baits listed at Pipestone Farm Supply by those label facts so you can pick by the rules rather than by a slogan. Every registration number below can be looked up on Health Canada's Pesticide Label Search, and each product page links to its label.
Domestic class vs Commercial class
Every registered pesticide in Canada carries a marketing class. Domestic-class products are registered for use in and around the home. Commercial-class products are registered for commercial, agricultural or industrial use. Whether a Commercial-class rodenticide can be sold to you, and how it may be used on a farm, is governed provincially; if you are looking at a Commercial-class item, ask us in store first.
Among the baits we list, the Tomcat bait stations, the Ramik Mouse Maze station, the Wilson Mouse Out pellets and the Rodents Away repellent are registered as Domestic class. The Ramik blocks, bars and mini bait packs, Havoc-XT Blok and DeciMax wax blocks and soft bait are registered as Commercial class (Health Canada Pesticide Label Search, registrations 26235, 30167, 30378, 31138, 34192 and 33334, registrant Neogen Corporation).
The five actives on our shelf, by label
- Bromethalin 0.01% (not an anticoagulant) — Tomcat Mouse Killer Disposable Bait Station Advanced Formula (PCP Reg. No. 34875) and Tomcat Rat Killer Disposable Bait Station Advanced Formula (PCP Reg. No. 34876), both Domestic class, registrant Scotts Canada Ltd. The mouse label reads "For use to control house mice (Mus musculus) indoors and outdoors" and asks you to "Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for at least 7 days."
- Diphacinone 0.005% (a first-generation anticoagulant) — Tomcat Mouse Killer Refillable Bait Station (PCP Reg. No. 31500) and Tomcat Rat Killer Refillable Bait Station (PCP Reg. No. 32034), Domestic class; the Ramik Mouse Maze pre-bait disposable station (PCP Reg. No. 23739), Domestic class; and the Commercial-class Ramik blocks (26235), bars (30167) and green mini bait packs (30378). The Tomcat mouse refill label reads "Bait MUST be placed in tamper-resistant bait stations." and "Maintain an uninterrupted supply of fresh bait for 15 days or until signs of mouse activity cease."
- Bromadiolone 0.005% (a second-generation anticoagulant) — DeciMax wax blocks (PCP Reg. No. 34192) and DeciMax soft bait (PCP Reg. No. 33334), both Commercial class.
- Brodifacoum 0.005% (a second-generation anticoagulant) — Havoc-XT Blok (PCP Reg. No. 31138), Commercial class; its label reads "FOR INDOORS USE ONLY" and names farm buildings.
- Cellulose from powdered corn cobs 42.75% — Wilson Mouse Out Rat & Mouse Killer Pellets (PCP Reg. No. 29427), Domestic class, registrant Premier Tech Ltd. Its label reads "For indoor use only (in buildings such as homes and barns)." and "Mice must feed exclusively on this product for a minimum of 3 days for death to occur, while rats must feed exclusively for a minimum of 8 days for death to occur." The 60 g place packs are opened, not set out whole: the label says to "open place packs and insert pellets into bait stations, feeding trays or bowls."
First-generation and second-generation are the chemists' terms for the two families of anticoagulant; the label of each product, not the family name, tells you where and how it may be used. Read the label on the pack and on the product page before you buy.
Mice or rats: the registration decides
A bait is registered for the species named on its label. The Ramik Mouse Maze station is registered for mice; it is not a rat bait, and its label reads "USE INDOORS ONLY IN AREAS INACCESSIBLE TO CHILDREN AND PETS." and "THIS BAIT STATION IS NOT TAMPER-RESISTANT." The Tomcat range has separate mouse and rat stations, each with its own registration number, block size and spacing: the mouse disposable label says "If additional units are to be used, place bait stations at 2 to 4 metre intervals." and the mouse refillable label says "If additional units are needed, place bait stations at 2.5 to 3.5 metre intervals."
Bait stations: what the labels require
Loose bait is the exception, not the rule. The Tomcat refill labels state "Bait MUST be placed in tamper-resistant bait stations.", and both the disposable and refillable Tomcat units are described on their labels as a "Child & dog resistant bait station." The precautions are the same across the range: "KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN, PETS AND LIVESTOCK." and "DO NOT place bait station in areas where there is a possibility of contaminating food or surfaces that come in direct contact with food". Gloves are required when handling bait and carcasses: "Rubber gloves must be worn when collecting and disposing of emptied bait stations, unconsumed bait and dead rodents." For the choice between a refillable and a disposable Tomcat station, see our guide Tomcat bait stations: mouse vs rat, refillable vs disposable.
When you do not want a poison at all
Rodents Away Odor Free (PCP Reg. No. 33648, Domestic class) is a repellent, not a bait. Its label reads "Rodents Away Odor Free reduces house mouse (Mus musculus) presence and activity." and lists "Indoor spaces including modes of transport (e.g., homes and recreational vehicles) where house mice are present." It is registered for house mice only. Our guide Rodent and Mouse Repellents in Canada: Pouches, Spray or Plug-In? compares it with the two Tomcat repellents, label by label. Snap traps, wood traps, glue boards and the multi-catch tin-cat style trap are not pesticides and carry no registration; they are listed in the same category.
Which one, by the label
- A house, garage or camper with mice, no refilling: a Tomcat Mouse Killer Disposable station (bromethalin, Domestic) or the Ramik Mouse Maze (diphacinone, Domestic, indoors only).
- The same, but you want a station you can reuse: the Tomcat Mouse Killer Refillable station with its 28 g blocks (diphacinone, Domestic).
- Rats around a house: the Tomcat Rat Killer Disposable (bromethalin) or Refillable (diphacinone) station, both Domestic.
- Mice or rats indoors, in bait stations, trays or bowls you set out yourself: Wilson Mouse Out pellets (cellulose, Domestic, indoor use only), kept out of areas that children, pets and domestic animals can reach, as its label requires.
- A barn, shop or bin yard where the volume of bait matters: the Commercial-class Ramik, Havoc-XT and DeciMax formats. Check each label's scope first: Havoc-XT Blok is indoor-only, in farm buildings, while the two DeciMax labels allow use indoors and outdoors within 15 metres of buildings. Ask us in store about buying and using Commercial-class product where you are.
- No poison: Rodents Away sachets for house mice, or traps (see Mouse and Rat Traps in Canada: Snap, Wood, Glue or Live-Catch?).
