Soft bait is the answer to the most frustrating problem in rodent control: a bait station full of blocks that nothing touches. Soft baits are a moist, high-fat, high-palatability formulation in a sachet, and rats and mice will usually work on one in preference to a wax block, particularly in a barn with grain around where the competing food is good. Rodents gnaw straight through the sachet, so it goes into the station whole. This is an anticoagulant rodenticide. Read the label before you open the pail — it is a legal document, and it tells you which sites the product is registered for, whether it must be placed in a tamper-resistant station, and the placement intervals. Follow it. Two hazards to take seriously. Bait is designed to be attractive to mammals, which means it is attractive to a farm dog, a barn cat and a curious child, so every placement belongs in a locked, tamper-resistant station anchored where livestock and pets cannot get at it. And secondary poisoning is real — owls, hawks, foxes and cats that eat a poisoned rodent take a dose of the anticoagulant with it, so pick up dead rodents daily rather than leaving them lying. If a dog or cat gets into bait, call your veterinarian immediately and take the label with you. Anticoagulant poisoning is treatable with vitamin K1 if you get ahead of it, and there is no reason to wait for symptoms — by the time a dog shows signs, days have already been lost.
