Wax blocks are the workhorse format for rodent baiting in wet or dirty conditions. The wax matrix holds the bait together where a loose or pelleted product would turn to mush — damp crawl spaces, an outdoor station that catches rain, a barn floor that gets washed — and most blocks are moulded with a hole so you can run them onto a rod inside a station instead of leaving them loose to be dragged off. The active here is bromadiolone at 0.005%, a second-generation anticoagulant. That means a rodent can take a lethal dose in a single feeding, though it takes several days to work, which is deliberate — rodents do not associate the bait with feeling ill and keep feeding. Read the label and follow it. It specifies the sites this product is registered for, whether it must be in a tamper-resistant bait station, and how far apart to place. In Canada the second-generation anticoagulants carry real use restrictions and they exist for good reason. Bromadiolone persists in tissue, so secondary poisoning is a genuine hazard to owls, hawks, foxes, and to the barn cats and dogs that will happily eat a slow rodent. Pick up carcasses daily, use locked stations anchored where nothing else can reach them, and keep the pail locked away from feed. If a dog or cat gets bait, or eats a poisoned rodent, call your veterinarian immediately and take the label along. Vitamin K1 treats it, and starting early matters a great deal. Four kilograms covers a yard site for a season in moderate pressure.
