A claw insulator holds the conductor in an open grip rather than a closed ring, which means you can lay wire in and lift it out again without threading a whole roll through. On a fence you build a section at a time, that is the difference between a morning's work and a fight. Patriot lists this one for poliwire, polirope and steel or aluminium wire, on wood posts or metal pipe, under product codes 880 0003-264 and 880 0003-265 with a five-year warranty. It fixes with nails or screws through the mounting holes, front or back of the post, and unlike most of the plastic line range it is rated for high-tensile wire. Twenty-five per pack in black, SKU 820023. High-tensile changes how you build. The wire holds its tension and does not stretch out the way soft wire does, so the insulator has to cope with real load and the post spacing can open up. A line insulator that will take it means you are not switching hardware halfway down the fence. Black keeps a permanent boundary fence looking like a fence rather than a construction site, which counts for something on a yard line or anywhere the fence is in view of the house.
