Chain and a snap works until your hands are full. A gate you have to set the pail down to open is a gate that eventually gets left open, and on a corral gate handled several times a day that adds up. This latch takes round tube gates in the 41 to 51 mm (1 5/8 to 2 inch) range and releases from either side with one hand. The body is zinc-coated, and it accepts a padlock if the gate faces a road or a shared approach. Patriot lists it as part 831693 under product code 880 0003-419. Mounting hardware for the gate is in the box; the hardware for the post end is not, so check what your post takes before you head out. Measure the tube before ordering. The large size is for the heavier 1 5/8 to 2 inch gates typical of corral and yard panels, and a lighter gate needs the small version. Hang the gate and let it settle to its resting height before you fix the post side, otherwise the latch will bind once the hinges take a set. This is mechanical gate hardware, not an electric fence fitting. If the gate opening also has to carry current, run insulated underground cable beneath it rather than relying on the latch.
