A gateway is the weak point of any electric fence, because it gets opened and closed constantly and it still has to be hot when it is shut. A spring gate solves both problems. The coiled spring stretches across the opening under tension, so the gate wire stays up off the ground instead of sagging into the dirt and shorting out. That tension is what makes it practical to live with. Unhook the handle and the spring pulls itself back out of the way, so the gate is not lying across the opening waiting to be driven over. Hook it up and it draws tight on its own with no slack to take up. On a gateway you go through several times a day with a tractor, a truck or a horse, that is the difference between a gate that gets used properly and one that eventually gets left open. This kit suits an opening up to about sixteen feet. Use an insulated gate handle at the live end, anchor the far side properly, and set the wire at a height your stock respect. Through winter, watch that snow is not drifting up under it, because a spring gate buried in a drift is a shorted gate.
