This is the fitting that takes the guesswork out of fence tension. A spring at rest tells you the wire has gone slack, and a spring fully drawn tells you it is too tight, so you get a visual tension gauge on every walk past. No pulling on the wire, no wondering. The spring is doing real work beyond that. Steel wire moves with temperature, and out here it moves a great deal. A wire strained tight on a cold March morning can be sagging by a hot July afternoon and back to hard tension again in January. The spring absorbs that swing, so the wire is not stretched past yield in the cold or lying in the grass in the heat. It also takes the shock when an animal hits the fence, which is what saves your staples, your insulators and eventually your corner posts. Fit one per wire in a run, somewhere along a stretch you pass regularly, and set the tension so the spring sits partway drawn on a mild day. That leaves it room to move in both directions through the year, which is the whole idea.
