A fence tester is the cheapest insurance on the place. The indicator on the energizer tells you the unit is firing. It tells you nothing about what is happening a mile down the line. This tester tells you what is on the wire where you are standing. Six neon lights come on in sequence as voltage rises, so you read the fence at a glance rather than squinting at a number. Push the ground lead into the soil, touch the probe to the wire, count the lights. Walk the line testing at intervals and the point where the lights drop off is the point where the fault is. That is how you find a cracked insulator, a bad splice or a wire lying in wet grass without walking the whole perimeter twice. There are no batteries in it, which is exactly what you want in something that lives in the glovebox through a prairie winter. Nothing to go flat, nothing to corrode, nothing to discover is dead on the one morning the cows are out. Keep it with the fencing pliers and use it every time you walk a fence, not only after something has already gone wrong.
