Every electric fence needs a way through it, and the gate handle is what makes that safe. The rubber body insulates your hand from the live wire, so you can open and close a gateway without thinking twice about it, in the dark, with wet gloves on, or while leading a horse through. It hooks onto an anchor on the far side and the tension in the handle holds the gate wire closed. That bit of give is what lets you hook it on a cold morning when everything else on the fence has contracted and pulled tight, and it takes the shock load if an animal walks into the gate wire instead of tearing the whole gateway out of the ground. Buy more than one. A gate handle is a small item that gets broken, lost in the grass, or dragged off by curious cattle, and a gateway with no handle turns into somebody unhooking a live wire with fencing pliers and a bad attitude. Set the gate so the handle end is on the dead side, which means an open gate leaves a dead wire lying on the ground rather than a live one.
