Details
Poultry netting is the fastest way to give a flock a big, safe run without building anything permanent. The posts are built into the net, so you unroll it, push the spikes in, connect the energizer and you have a working fence inside half an hour. Once the birds have picked the ground over, you lift it and set it somewhere fresh. The mesh does the real work. It is close enough at the bottom that a chick cannot walk out and a fox or a skunk will not slip under, and tall enough that a coyote thinking about a jump meets hot wire on the way over. Around here it is usually the predators rather than the birds that justify the fence in the first place. Run it from an energizer with enough output for the length of net you have standing, and keep the bottom clear of grass, because netting shorts out far more easily than a single strand. Take it down and roll it before hard freeze-up. A net frozen into the ground tears when you pull on it, and a whole season of good service can be lost in one careless November afternoon.
