The PE10 puts out 0.3 joules and Patriot rates it for up to 10 miles of fence or 40 acres. It plugs into a standard 110 volt outlet, which makes it the straightforward choice for a small property where the fence is within reach of the house or the shed and you would rather not think about batteries at all. Mains power has one real advantage over battery: it does not run down. No charging, no watching a state-of-charge light through a cold snap, no walking out in January to find the fence went quiet three days ago. Plug it in and it works. The unit itself is a low impedance design with an LED indicator and a robust knob, and Patriot backs it with a two-year warranty that includes lightning protection. It needs to be kept under shelter and out of the weather, so plan on mounting it inside a shed, a barn or a weatherproof box rather than on a fence post. Suited to acreages, horse paddocks and hobby livestock rather than a full cattle operation on long boundary runs.
