The PB12 is the go-anywhere unit. It puts out 0.12 joules from 0.16 stored joules, and Patriot rates it for up to 10 miles of fence or 40 acres. It runs on four D batteries dropped inside, or off an external 6 or 12 volt battery if you want longer service between changes. Batteries are not included. The point of it is portability. Small remote areas and quick temporary fences are exactly what it is built for: a strip across a swath, a temporary lane, a pen set up at a distant water source, keeping horses off a hay yard for a week. There is no cord to find, no panel to mount, and you can carry it out with the reel and the posts in one trip. Simple set-up, an on-off switch, an LED indicator and a low impedance design, with a two-year Patriot warranty that includes lightning protection. Do not ask it to do a permanent boundary fence on a cattle operation. At this output it is a light-duty and temporary tool, and using it beyond that scale is how a fence stops holding.
