Patriot lightning arrestor
A porcelain-framed arrestor with steel connection points, fitted to the fence line to help protect the energizer from a lightning strike.
Details
A prairie thunderstorm and a mile of wire strung on posts across open ground is not a combination that favours your energizer. A strike does not have to hit the fence directly. A nearby hit induces a surge in the line, and that surge travels straight back to the one expensive component in the system. A lightning arrestor gives that energy somewhere else to go. Fitted into the fence line ahead of the energizer and tied to its own earth, it takes the spike and dumps it into the ground rather than through the electronics. The frame is porcelain, which does not track or degrade the way plastic does, with steel connection points for the fence and ground connections. It is not a guarantee. Nothing is, against lightning. But it substantially improves the odds, and it costs a fraction of the energizer it protects. Fit one on any system on exposed ground, on long runs, and on the leg that comes in from the highest or most open part of the place. Give it a proper ground of its own, separate from the energizer earth, and check the connections when you check the fence.
