Guessing at fence voltage is how people end up with stock on the road. A neon tester tells you the fence is live. It does not tell you whether it is live enough to turn a cow with a winter coat on. This meter gives you an actual number, reading from 200 volts up to 9,900 volts. Use it two ways. First, walk the line and read voltage at the far end, at each branch, and either side of anything you suspect. A drop between two points tells you the fault is between them, and you narrow it down from there instead of walking the whole quarter. Second, and this is the one most people skip, test the ground system. Put the fence under load, then read the earth stakes. If the ground is not doing its job, the fence cannot deliver a shock no matter how good the energizer is, and dry or deeply frozen prairie soil makes poor grounding a real and seasonal problem here. Built to be handled in a work glove and carried in a coat pocket. Check the fence on a schedule, not after something goes wrong.
