The 4-5 is the largest of the range, taking wire from 9 gauge down to 12.5 gauge, and 12.5 gauge barbed. Ten to a pack. If you are working with heavy smooth wire on a main boundary or joining old heavy-gauge barbed, this is the sleeve that actually closes on it. Nine gauge shows up on older boundary fences and on runs built to take real punishment: corrals, bull pens, high-traffic lanes where a lighter wire would be replaced every second year. Wire that heavy will not twist into a reliable joint by hand, and a crimp is the only practical way to splice it in the field. Because the sleeve covers a range, size your setting to the wire you are actually joining and use a crimping tool that suits these sleeves. A sleeve that is only partly closed will hold under a light pull and let go under a real one, which you tend to discover at four in the morning when the cows are on the road. Crimp it properly and pull-test it before you move on.
