The five-inch pin is the one you reach for on lighter brace work. Cross-fencing, a paddock corner, an end assembly carrying two or three wires rather than a full high-tensile run. It does the same job as the longer pin, holding the horizontal brace rail hard into the upright so the assembly cannot rack under load, but it suits smaller diameter posts where a ten-inch pin would run out the far side with nothing to bite. Five to a box, galvanized so it does not rust its way loose in the fifteen or twenty years a good corner is expected to stand. For wood posts only. Fence hands who skip this step tend to find out about it in spring. Ground moves, wire pulls, and a brace held together with spikes goes slack a little at a time until the corner post is out of plumb and every wire in the run has lost tension. A pin costs a couple of dollars and takes a minute. Keep a box in the fencing kit alongside the staples.
