Every gateway in an electric fence needs a way through, and the gate handle is it. One end hooks onto an insulated anchor at the closing post, the other carries the gate wire. You take hold of the plastic body, pull, and the circuit opens with your hand nowhere near the conductor. The insulation is the entire job. A handle that has cracked, gone chalky in the sun or worn through at the hook will eventually get somebody, usually in wet weather and usually the person who does not live on the place. They cost little enough that there is no argument for running a marginal one through another season. Black plastic stands up to UV better than the pale colours. On a gateway used after dark or by people who do not know the yard, a brighter handle earns its keep, but for a working gate between paddocks the black is the sensible pick. Keep a couple of spares in the shop. Gate handles get more handling than anything else on a fence and they are usually the first part to fail.
