A wire fence does not stay tight. Temperature swings between minus thirty and plus thirty move a wire a long way, frost lifts posts, and animals leaning on a line stretch it. The strainer is the part of the system that lets you take that slack back out. It sits in the line, and turning it winds wire onto a spool to shorten the run. The useful part is that these can be added to a fence that is already up without cutting the wire. If you have a sagging strand somewhere out in a quarter, you fit a strainer to it and tighten, rather than cutting, splicing and hoping. On a new fence, put one in each strand near an end assembly so you have a tensioning point from the start. They handle both steel and aluminum wire. Go easy on aluminum, since it is soft and will neck down and break if you crank on it, and remember that on an electric fence the strainer sits in the current path, so keep the wire seated properly and the connection clean. Five per pack, enough for a multi-strand end assembly.
