Wide tape needs a wide buckle. A 2-inch polytape carries its stainless conductors spread right across the webbing, so a joint has to clamp the whole width or you lose most of the conductors at that point. These buckles do exactly that - the tape threads through the slots, folds back on itself, and the buckle holds it flat and conductive. The alternative is a knot, and a knot is a mistake on tape. It crushes the fine stainless filaments, so the fence tests fine between the energizer and the knot and dead beyond it. It also concentrates all the mechanical load on a small bunched-up section that works loose in wind. Use them at mid-line splices, on repairs, and at end and corner insulators where the tape terminates and doubles back on itself. Five per pack. On a horse fence in particular it is worth keeping spares, since wide tape takes the brunt of wind and snow load, and a splice you can make in a couple of minutes with cold hands beats restringing a run.
