Steel wire has one job on an electric fence system where aluminum is normally used, and it is an important one: the ground bed. Galvanized steel is what most ground rods and clamps are made of, and running steel wire from the energizer earth terminal to the rods and between the rods keeps the whole connection the same metal. Mixing metals in wet ground invites galvanic corrosion, and a corroded ground connection is the single most common reason a fence tests weak with no visible fault. Steel is also stiffer than aluminum, so it holds a shape and stands up to being buried, clamped and worked on. A hundred feet is enough for a three-rod ground bed with room to reach the energizer, plus wire left over for the next job. Bury the ground bed leads where you can, keep the rods well away from any buried utility line or building ground, and set them in the dampest ground you have, which in much of Alberta means picking your spot carefully in a dry August. Clamp connections tight and check them once a season.
