When you are fencing acreage rather than a paddock, buying wire by the half mile makes sense - fewer joins in the line, fewer places for a fault, and no running to town partway through a job. This is the standard light hot wire in a working quantity. Aluminum conducts several times better than galvanized steel wire of the same gauge, and it does not rust. On a fence line that runs a long way from the energizer, that conductivity is what keeps voltage up at the far corner where the cattle actually are. It also means the wire itself is not the weak point in your system three winters from now. Handle it as aluminum, not high-tensile steel. Tension firm and use in-line strainers or compression springs to take up slack rather than pulling the line drum-tight, because Prairie temperature swings will move a wire a surprising amount between January and July. Join with crimp sleeves, not twists. If the run is very long or carrying a lot of load, step the main line up to 14 gauge and use this for the branches and offsets.
