Seventeen gauge aluminum is the everyday electric fence wire. It conducts far better than steel of the same size and it will not rust, which is why it outlasts and outperforms cheap galvanized wire on a hot line even though it is lighter in the hand. Use it for pasture strands, cross-fencing, offset wires run off an existing barbed or page wire fence, and paddock lines. A quarter-mile roll covers a good stretch of single strand or a smaller enclosure fenced two or three high. It is light enough that one person can run it out off a spinning jenny without help. Aluminum is soft. Do not strain it like high-tensile steel. Tension it firm and let in-line strainers or compression springs take up the slack that comes with heat, cold and frost movement, and it will stay put through a Prairie winter without pulling posts or snapping. Join lengths with crimp sleeves rather than hand twists; a twisted aluminum joint corrodes and becomes a high-resistance spot that costs you voltage down the line. For very long main runs, go up to 14 gauge.
