Pins are consumable. A tagger that suddenly starts pushing tags through crooked, tearing ears, or refusing to seat a button has usually got a pin problem rather than a tool problem, and swapping it takes a minute at the bench. These are the hollow point style used on Y-Tex two-piece taggers. The hollow point is what allows the male stud to travel through the ear cleanly and lock into the panel on the far side. A pin that has been closed on a headgate rail, dropped on concrete or simply worn round after several seasons will not do that reliably, and the damage shows up in the ear rather than in the tool. Two in a pack is the sensible number to keep on hand: one to fit now and one in the box for the morning it happens again with cattle already in the alley. These fit two-piece taggers only and are not the right part for a one-piece applicator, so check which system you are running before ordering.
