A bag of twenty-five yellow LitterStar piglet tags, roughly an inch square, for identifying pigs from the farrowing pen onward.

Piglet ears are tiny, and the tag has to be tiny with them. LitterStar runs about an inch and an eighth square with an inch of usable face, which is small enough to sit in a young pig's ear without pulling on it and large enough to carry a litter or individual number you can actually read. The reason to tag that early is that the information you want later is generated now. Which sow farrowed the litter, birth date, the ones you flagged as keepers. Tagging in the farrowing pen means none of that has to be reconstructed from memory when the gilts come up for selection months down the road. Yellow reads well against the pink and grey you are looking at in a farrowing barn under artificial light, and it stays visible when the pig is lying in a pile with its littermates. Set the tag between the cartilage ribs, well back from the edge of the ear, and take your time with a young pig. These are management and visual identification tags, not a substitute for an approved traceability tag.
