A tagger is a tool you use a few hundred times in a week and then hang on a nail for eleven months, so the things that matter are how it sits in a cold hand and how quickly it clears after each animal. The Compact is the shorter-bodied UltraTagger, aimed at speed. It takes Y-Tex two-piece tags, with the female panel seated in the jaw and the male button on the pin. The quick release pin is the part worth knowing about: once the tag is through the ear, the pin comes clear of the button without you having to twist the tool around inside a moving ear, which is where most torn ears and bent pins come from. The smaller frame suits people with smaller hands, working in a squeeze where there is not much room between the headgate bars, and anyone tagging calves rather than mature cows. Load a handful of tags on the jaw before you start a run, keep the pin clean, and check that it is seating fully before the first animal goes in.
